Painted Bullfinch Ornament

Handpainted wooden Bullfinch ornament. 2" wooden bird on 4" ribbon.

The Bullfinch (known in Sweden as domherre and in Norwegian as dompap) is deeply tied to winter and Christmas folklore. It's an iconic symbol of the holiday season and a popular motif in Nordic winter art and holiday cards. Scandinavians traditionally place a sheaf of oats (The Yule Sheaf or Julkärve / Julenek) on a pole or outside a window to feed wild birds during the Christmas season. Historically, if the first bird to feed from the sheaf was a male bullfinch, it was considered a major omen for a prosperous and good upcoming year.
