Risgrøt (rice porridge) has a couple beloved Scandinavian holiday traditions. It can be made to appease the mythical household spirit (Tomte in Sweden, Nisse in Norway and Denmark, or Tonttu in Finland). It's left out on Christmas Eve with a generous pat of butter on top, to stave off mischief by the spirit and encourage good luck and prosperity.
Another tradition is to hide a peeled almond inside the risgrøt. The person who finds the hidden almond receives a marzipan pig as a prize that may bring them good luck.
